HFA Symposium: Issues and opportunities facing hedge fund industry

hfa_logo_2012The landscape under which Hedge Funds now operate has evolved enormously over the past few years, leading to a number of challenges and opportunities for those within the industry. It is as important as ever for practitioners in the Hedge Fund industry to remain informed of these recent trends and changes, and there is no better way to do so than to get involved with the Hedge Fund Association. The Cayman Islands chapter of the Hedge Fund Association is kicking off 2014 with an inaugural conference on January 9th, discussing the latest trends and issues facing the industry. If you are a practitioner in the Hedge Fund Industry in the Cayman Islands, this event is not to be missed.

EVENT SPEAKERS

Keynote: Dr. Kevin Mirabile

Professor of Finance,

Fordham University

Dr. Mirabile is currently a Professor of Finance at Fordham University where he teaches courses on the principles of finance, alternative investing and hedge funds. Dr. Mirabile has over 30 years of business development, regulatory, financing, accounting, trading and sales experience in financial services dating back to 1983. He is an author of a book on hedge fund investing entitled, “Hedge Fund Investing: A practical guide to investor motivation, manager profits and fund performance” published by Wiley Press, January 2013 and is an active industry consultant on the topics of hedge fund investing, operational and business model risk assessment. Dr. Mirabile received his B.S. in Accounting from S.U.N.Y Albany in 1983, his M.S. in Banking and Finance from Boston University in 2008 and completed his doctoral studies with a D.P.S. degree in Finance and Economics from PACE University in May 2013.

Partner,

Maples and Calder

Christina Bodden is a Partner in the Investment Funds group of leading international law firm, Maples and Calder. She specializes in the structuring of private equity funds and advising on the related downstream transactions. Christina also works extensively with major institutions and hedge fund managers and their onshore counsel, advising on the structuring and ongoing operation of all aspects of investment funds. Additionally, she has a particular expertise in hedge fund sideletter arrangements and fund restructurings. Christina joined the law firm’s Investment Funds group in 2004 and was elected as a partner in 2012. She is a co-founder of the Cayman Islands location of 100 Women in Hedge Funds and serves both on their local main committee and their philanthropic sub-committee.

John Lewis

John Lewis joined HighWater Limited (“HighWater”) in July 2008. HighWater was established in January 2007 and is currently licensed by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority to carry on the business of company management. HighWater’s core business is the provision of independent directors and related services to the alternative investment industry.

John Lewis joined HighWater after six years with Butterfield Fund Services where he held the role of Managing Director in Cayman and Regional Head of the Americas. Previously he spent two years as Vice President of Fund Accounting with the Bank of New York in Manhattan and eight years with Ethical Funds Administration in Vancouver, Canada where he departed with the title of General Manager and Assistant Vice President. Prior to moving into industry, John spent six years as an auditor with PriceWaterhouse Coopers and Deloitte & Touche in Johannesburg, London and Vancouver.

Niko Whittaker

KPMG

Niko Whittaker is the Director of Business Development for KPMG in the Cayman Islands. Niko oversees the business development activities for alternative investments across audit, tax and advisory. Prior to taking on the business development roll for KPMG Cayman, he spent 13 years as an auditor within the alternative investments and insurance industry and is a licensed CPA in the State of New York. Niko is actively involved in the local community initiatives and is an active member of Rotary Sunrise and a past Treasurer for the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman and the National Trust of the Cayman Islands.

Monette Windsor

Head of Fund Services,

UBS

Monette Windsor is the CEO of UBS’ flagship fund services office located in the Cayman Islands. Overseeing 130+ professionals that service hedge funds, fund of funds and private equity vehicles. She is a member of UBS’ Fund Services Management Committee, and also holds roles as the Global Head of Fund of Funds and Marketing. She has over 13 years experience in the alternatives industry and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Monette is actively involved in local community initiatives and is a member of the organizing committees of Hedge Funds Cares and 100 Women in Hedge Funds.
