Haiti gang leader, Clifford Brandt, recaptured

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (HCNN) – Haiti’s most feared gang leader, Clifford Brandt, has been recaptured by Haitian police on Tuesday, after having escaped from a prison outside the capital, Port-au-Prince, on Sunday.
Brandt was re-arrested in the Cornillon-Grand Bois area, not far from the Haitian-Dominican border. He was accompanied with 3 other escapees who were also captured.
Brandt, who once led one of the most feared gang in Haiti, fled on Sunday the prison of the Croix-des-Bouquets district, outside the capital, following a mutiny. Brandt’s gang, which was specialized in kidnapping, was dismantled during the past couple of years.
The recapture of Brandt was the result of a cooperation between the Haitian police and members of security forces from the neighboring Dominican Republic.
Haitian Prime minister Laurent Lamothe congratulated the police and the population that also provided information leading to the arrest.
“We want all escapees back to their prison cell where they belong, and we are going to continue to support the police in their relentless efforts to recapture the fugitives,” Lamothe told HCNN on Tuesday.
“Brandt is one big fish but we won’t rest until we recapture those still on the run,” Lamothe said.
46 police agents took part in the operation which led to Brandt’s recapture on Tuesday. 19 escapees have been captured so far and 100 have been identified, according to prison authorities.
It is not clear now whether he will be sent back to the same prison of Croix-des-Bouquets from which he escaped, following a mutiny, according to police authorities.
