We’re back! 2021 was an amazing year and as we kick off 2022, we are pleased to share the launch of new offerings with Global Startup Ecosystem GSE! 

Our mission since inception is to Prepare Individuals for the Digital Age.  The (GSE) community has accelerated during the past few years and we are now centralising our content and programs into one unified experience.

  • A new report says Google is working on an AR/VR headset to compete with Meta and Apple — the project is called Project Iris, and they’re aiming to ship in 2024.

  • Instagram launched a test version of creator subscriptions, which would allow users to pay their favourite creators for exclusive content.
  • Facebook announced a ban on advertisements targeting patients based on specific health conditions, which could be a big blow to clinical trials.
  • Twitter is developing a new feature called Flock that lets users send tweets to curated groups.
  •  Spotify partnered with Stripe to help podcasters generate subscription revenue.
  • Elizabeth Holmes, the former CEO of Theranos, was found guilty. She could face up to 20 years in prison for each of those 3 counts and 5 years for the other.
  • The Grammy Awards were postponed due to Omicron.

  • According to the Mobile Economy Report, 615 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa will subscribe to mobile services by 2025, that’s equivalent to 50% of the region’s population.
  • The TEF Entrepreneurship Program is open to entrepreneurs from across Africa, either with new startup ideas or existing businesses of less than 3 years of existence, operating in any sector;  receive business training, mentoring, a non-refundable $5,000 of seed capital and global networking opportunities.
  • MTN Nigeria is ready to release RCS Business Messaging.MTN is geared to launch Rich Communications Services (RCS) Business Messaging (RBM) Services in partnership with Google and Dotgo.
  • Agbora Launches “Africa’s Social Network” With Hopes of Connecting Africa and the African Diaspora.ts features include a robust newsfeed,..
  • Xend Finance Launches Africa’s First Crypto Banking App.The blockchain-based application allows users to save in stable currencies, in order to hedge against inflation and devaluation. The app is now available on all iOS and Android stores.
  • Twitter Officially Launches Its “Twitter Ghana” Handle And Unveils Billboards With Tweets In Accra. 
  • Government To Implement Electronic Payment Levy In 2022. At a Budget reading in Parliament,  the Minister of Parliament, Ken Ofori Atta proposed a new levy on electronic payments to begin in February 2022. The aim of this levy will be to widen the tax net and rope in the informal sector in Ghana.
  • Nigerian Cashback App, Lumi, already has 60,000 Millennials and Gen-Zers Using It In Less Than One Year. Just one year into the market, Lumi has positioned itself as the Rewards app of choice for Nigeria’s youthful population. Since it was launched in Lagos in December 2020.
  • Nigeria has moved a step closer to rolling out its landmark Nigeria Startup Bill(NSB)
  • IFC plans to invest $3 million in Nigerian tech startups

  • Imperial College London is working with the Abu Dhabi-based Technology Innovation Institute to create an operating system (OS) that is intended to change the way datacentre operators secure their cloud technology stacks.
  • The Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs recently funded an innovation project for VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland to build the country’s first quantum computer.  
  • Swedish researchers are patiently developing a useful quantum computer. 

Caribbean Tech and Business News 

  • Haiti tops the list of eight (8) Caribbean countries with the most cryptocurrency users. A cryptocurrency is an alternative digital currency to traditional currency. It allows financial transactions, purchases, transfers, among others.
  • A Trinidad and Tobago-based gas company, Phoenix Park Gas Processors Limited, has acquired an NGLs Terminal in Texas.
  • Massy has achieved another milestone with the cross-listing of Massy Holdings Limited onto the Jamaica Stock Exchange. The company said the cross-listing represents a “critical transaction for Jamaica and the region at large”.
