Dart sponsors national women’s football team

Dart Cayman Islands has stepped up to sponsor the Cayman National Under-20 Women’s Team, which has taken their preparations overseas for the CONCACAF Championship in January.

Dart’s funding provided the opportunity for travel to the United States, Costa Rica and Panama, which are essential stops for the team’s preparation for January’s tournament.

“It’s critical for the team to be together one month ahead of the tournament,” said First Vice President of the Cayman Islands Football Association Bruce Bake.

“Incorporating the overseas-based players into the team at this time provides the coaching staff a perfect opportunity to evaluate the players and fine tune strategy and tactics ahead of the competition in January,” he added.

The team opened their training camp with a 2-2 draw against Fort Lauderdale’s Gold Soccer Academy and also battled bravely in their second warm up match of their overseas training camp, but lost to West Pines Football Club 3-0.

Following Fort Lauderdale, the team headed to Costa Rica for three matches, including a game against the Costa Rican National Team that will also be competing in Cayman in January.

The Cayman Islands is one of the eight teams competing in the CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championship. The top three teams advance to the 2013 FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup finals in Canada.

Webb disappointed  with Cayman government

Jeff Webb, Caymanian President of the Confederation of Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and a FIFA vice president had earlier expressed his disappointment in Cayman’s government not funding the women’s team.

He said, ““I was advised due to the new budget, there will be no funding for the team. We asked for a stipend and it’s disappointing. I’m hopeful it’s not what lies ahead in the future.”

Webb said in his press conference on Thursday (19) that the upcoming Under-20 women’s tournament would generate more money than any other tournament held in the Cayman Islands.

“There’s different ways to look at it, the Under-15 boys’ impact,” Webb said. “From the investment standpoint, it was $3.2 million and that went directly into the hotel industry and that was huge for the country. When you look at the media support/coverage, the U15s received $2.4 million in advertising value. There was $5 million worth of website views/Internet traffic.

“This tournament will have live TV with ‘Fox Sports’ carrying all the U.S. women’s games. What this will mean for the girls tournament is…I estimate about $12 million to $15 million in advertising.”

Tired legs cause Cayman to stumble in Fort Lauderdale

A fatigued Cayman Islands National Under 20 Girls team battled bravely in their second warm up match of their overseas training camp but lost to West Pines Football Club 3 nil.

Despite suffering through twice daily training sessions administered by Head Coach Joe Supe and his staff, the Cayman ladies held off the home team for the entire regular period.

West Pines Football Club broke the deadlock moments before the referee’s final whistle with Samantha Toribio (90th), Nicole Richards (90+2) and Jessica Roman (90+5).

Despite the result, Assistant Coach Marcos Tinico told CaymanFootball.com, “our team played very well considering the strength of the opponent, we understand that the team was tired at the end and they’ve been training twice a day resulting in three goals after the regular time.”

Coach Supe is encouraged by the team’s start to the tour in Fort Lauderdale, after drawing the first warm up on Sunday and despite defeat the team’s defense was solid.
