Cross−country gold for Pozzi adds to record−breaking Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 for Italy and it’s a one−two for Sweden in Women’s Sprint

International Olympic Committee

29 January 2024 – Federico Pozzi won yet another gold for the outstanding Italy team at the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024, his triumph coming in the Cross-country men’s sprint free final.

Pozzi’s gold took Italy’s tally to 11 golds, having already become the first country to be in double figures for golds in a single edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games. This has demonstrated the level of young talent in Italy ahead of them hosting the next Olympic Winter Games – Milano Cortina 2026.

Jakob Elias Moch (GER) took silver at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre, 33 seconds behind Pozzi’s time of 3:16.27. Tabor Greenberg (USA) won bronze.

The Women’s Sprint Free final was dominated by Swedish athletes. Elsa Taenglander won gold in 3:33.98, which was 26 seconds clear of compatriot Kajsa Johansson. Nelli-Lotta Karpellin won bronze on a good day for Finland’s women at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre, with Minja Korhonen winning gold in the Nordic Combined.

The Cross-country skiers will have further opportunities to win medals in Tuesday’s men’s and women’s 7.5km Classic events, and the Mixed Team Relay on Thursday – the final day of the Winter YOG.

The Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 is filmed for live television and digital streaming on the Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the Olympics app, with full session replays and highlights also available.
