Coconuts everyone

CI Coconut Fest

The Cayman Islands Agriculture Society/Market at the Grounds, in conjunction with the Information Commissioner’s Office, Health Services Authority and Youth Services Junior Culinary Programme, will be hosting a Coconut Festival/Our Traditions this Saturday, 6 October.

The event takes place at the Stacy Walter Agriculture Pavilion between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon and promises to be a family event, with fun and food for all to enjoy.

There will be sampling of traditional Cayman coconut dinners such as conch stew and beans with pie, plus coconut ice-cream, coconut candy, drops, tarts, and of course, coconut water.  Local chefs taking part in Coconut Fest are Alvin McLaughlin, Eulene McLaughlin, Ivy Thomas and Ms Zelma Lee Ebanks, to name a few.

The public is invited to visit the ICO booth to meet the Commissioner and ICO staff who will be available to discuss and answer questions.

Heath Services Authority dietician Bethany Smith will also be on hand to discuss the many benefits of coconuts as well as to distribute handouts on healthy eating.

“Coconut water is rich in potassium, has moderate sugar levels and is a good alternative to soft drinks and fruit juices,” Ms Smith said.

Coconut Festival is free to the public.
