Chantal is gone but remains will bring rain

Chantal remnants Thu 10amChantal dissipated Wednesday afternoon into a tropical rainstorm (wave). Though the threat for damaging winds has decreased, heavy, flooding downpours will continue from Hispaniola to the Bahamas and here in Cayman we will feel its effects too.

Thu (11) night:  Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a 60% chance of showers and thunder mainly over Cayman Brac. Temperatures will fall to the upper 70’s. Winds will be southeast 10 to 15 knots. Seas will be moderate with wave heights of 3 to 5 feet. Gusty winds and rough seas are expected near showers. Showers may be locally heavy at times.

OUTLOOK: As the wave moves over the NW Caribbean the Cayman area can expect cloudy skies, scattered showers and thunder through Saturday morning mainly over Grand Cayman. Some showers will be heavy at times and may lead to possible flooding of low-lying areas mainly over Grand Cayman.

Small Craft should exercise caution over open water.

Moderate to rough with wave heights of  4 to 6 feet are expected.

For The North Atlantic…Caribbean Sea And The Gulf Of Mexico…

A large area of disturbed weather primarily associated with the remnants of Chantal extends from Hispaniola northward to the southeastern and central Bahamas and the adjacent Atlantic.

There are no signs of regeneration at this time and upper-level winds are forecast to remain hostile for significant development.  This system has a low chance…20 percent…of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours. Regardless of development…heavy rains and gusty winds…especially in squalls…are expected to spread over the southeastern and central Bahamas today and Friday as the disturbance moves northwestward.

jamaica_map_400_866034251KINGSTON, Jamaica, Thursday July 11, 2013 – Residents along sections Maxfield Avenue in the Corporate Area were forced to evacuate their homes following flooding associated with a tropical wave – remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal .

Although Chantal, the third named storm of the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season, broke up east of Jamaica, the Meteorological Service in its latest update says the  low-lying and flood-prone areas of the eastern parishes of St. Thomas, St. Mary and Portland, the central parishes of St. Catherine and Clarendon as well as the Corporate Area, remain under a Flash Flood Watch as the tropical wave continues to influence weather conditions across the island.

The tropical wave has also influenced weather conditions across Hispaniola. There was one storm related death in the Dominican Republic when a firefighter was swept away by floodwaters late Wednesday.

Juan Ramon Rodriguez, 26, was trying to clear a storm drain when rushing waters carried him away, said Luis Luna, director of the country’s civil defense agency.

The National Hurricane Centre says as much as 3 to 6 inches of rain should be expected in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. (CMC)
