Cayman: National Day of Mourning on Friday (20) for Ms Sybil

Cayman Islands’ National Hero and first Speaker of the House, Hon. Sybil McLaughlin, MBE, JP, who passed away on 10 May, will be honoured with a National Day of Mourning.

Friday, 20 May will be observed as a National Day of Mourning for ‘Ms Sybil’, as she was fondly addressed in the community. The day will include a minute of silence marked across the three islands at 9 am.

Members of the public are asked to pay their respects to the beloved departed National Hero and join in the official Day of Mourning by observing a minute of silence at 9 am on the day. All radio stations are asked to pause their broadcasts for one minute of silence at 9 am on Friday. All uniform branches are asked to wear black armbands or ribbons on the day as well.

Also on Friday, the official funeral service will take place at Elmslie Memorial Church from 1 pm.

Notable observances also include: flags will be flown half-mast today (Thursday) and all-day Friday in honour of Ms Sybil. She will also be accorded a lying in state, as part of the official funeral, on Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm in the House of Parliament.
