Royal Cayman Islands police Services’ helicopter provides emergency medical services to Cayman Brac twice in one week

The Air Operations Unit (AOU) completed a medical evacuation of a critical heart patient from Cayman Brac yesterday, 1 October, at approximately 1pm. The police helicopter transported the patient directly to Health City on Grand Cayman from Faith Hospital on Cayman Brac, considerably reducing the travel time to the specialist cardiac treatment unit.

This emergency medical evacuation follows the emergency transport of a specialist doctor and a quantity of blood just two days before to Faith Hospital on Tuesday, 29 September, around 11AM, after the HSA requested assistance for a pregnant patient in critical condition. Thanks to the quick delivery of both the doctor and blood supply, the patient completed surgery successfully, and both the mother and unborn child are currently in good condition.

The car park of Faith Hospital was cleared in both instances so that the helicopter could land. Health City, however, has a helicopter landing site.
Both incidents demonstrate once again the speed and versatility of the police helicopter and AOU officers as they respond to a variety of critical situations for the benefit of the public of the Cayman Islands. Air Operations Unit Commander, Steve Fitzgerald, said “Whilst not a regular occurrence, we are always prepared for this kind of flight and glad that we can help bring about a positive outcome for everyone involved.”
