Cayman Islands Department of Tourism targets rich UK visitors

Wealthy Brits targeted by Cayman Department of Tourism

As part of a concerted international tourism drive, the Cayman Islands’ Department of Tourism is particularly targeting wealthy tourists from the UK, reveals land investments specialists Crown World.

Cayman Concierge is a personalised one-on-one tourism service which was launched by the Department of Tourism last winter, aimed at the more high-end class of traveller. This customised service is part of the Department of Tourism’s  bid to attract rich visitors from the UK in particular.

While Don McDougall, regional manager, Europe, for the Department of Tourism acknowledges that this is the “best winter in my 14 years in the Department” when it comes to arrivals, Cayman tourism figures can never rival countries such as France and the UK, which attract between 1.5 million and 2 million visitors every year.

However, this does mean that the Cayman tourist board are in a position to offer a service as individualised as Cayman Concierge, whereas the UK tourist board, for example, would never be able to roll out such a service on the scale required. What this means is that UK tourists coming to Cayman will benefit from an exclusive, bespoke tourism service which they will struggle to find anywhere else in the world.

Cayman arrivals between October 2011 and March 2012 reached 12,409, with 75% coming from the UK, an increase of around 1,000 UK visitors when compared to the previous year.

McDougall commented, “In times of severe austerity, when everyone is looking at cutbacks, it is indicative that those who still have money are looking for new opportunities…My feeling is that if they are looking to spend a two-week holiday in the Caribbean, they don’t want to spend it with everyone else in an all-inclusive resort. We offer ‘all-exclusive’ not all-inclusive.”

This is an attitude to be welcomed by those with land investments in the Cayman Islands who have the ultimate aim of  rental yield from short-term tourist lets. The average Cayman Concierge customer is far more likely to stay in quality rental accommodation than in all-inclusive resorts or chain hotels.
