Cayman Islands Cultural Foundation announces grant recipients

unnamed-1 unnamed-2CNCF Grants for the Arts 2015 – Recipients Announced!

From CNCF

We are pleased to announce the recipients of our first round of 2015 Grants For the Arts. There were many applications and the Committee had a tough decision to make as there are a limited number of grants available. Here are our chosen recipients:

Nayil Arana at 15 years old has already been playing his violin for 10 years and the piano for 8 years. He also plays regularly with the Savannah United Church, Cayman Music School and the Cayman Island Folk Singers. Nayil has successfully received a CNCF Grant to enable him to attend the Luzerne Music Centre’s Senior Session which takes place in the summer in New York. This camp will give Nayil the opportunity to improve his solo performances, chamber group performances and ability to work within an orchestra.

The Ponciana Festival is a new 3 day festival celebrating film, music and art. The purpose is to nurture and showcase their creative work in the Cayman Islands. The festival directors, Badir Awe and Ronnie James Hughes, both come from film and events backgrounds, including the short film ‘The Devil You Know’ which was directed by Badir and starred Ronnie. With connections in both the art and film scenes in Cayman, they hope their experiences will produce a festival which will become an annual event.

unnamed-3unnamed-4Karlie Lovinggood is a young Caymanian who is involved in both theatre and film. Karlie will be using her grant to attend the London Film Academy’s Screenwriting Foundation programme which takes place in June. Karlie sees this experience as an opportunity to learn skills from experienced tutors which will help further her career in writing for both film and television. She will then be well positioned to take advantage of new opportunities as they arise in Cayman’s fast growing film and television industries.

Swanky Kitchen Band has received another CNCF grant to produce a live recorded album with an expanded 10 person band. This third album hopes to capture the dynamic live music experience which has endeared the Swanky Kitchen Band to local audiences by reviving traditional Caymanian songs as well as adding new songs to their catalogue. The album will also help Swanky gain bookings at international music festivals where they can share their traditional Caymanian music with a wider audience of music lovers from all over the world.
