Competition was fierce on March 6th and 7th, as athletes from the Primary and Secondary schools as well as representatives from the various track clubs participated in the CUC Youth and Junior Track and Field Championships.

A highlight of the meet was the qualifying events for those hoping to make the CARIFTA team. This team will be officially announced on March 30th.

This year marks the 29th year that CUC, which is the main corporate sponsor of the Cayman Islands Athletic Association (CIAA) and track and field in the Cayman Islands, has been involved with the Association and its endeavours.

In 2012, CUC signed a four-year sponsorship agreement with the Cayman Islands Athletic Association (CIAA), which started the second Quadrennial Sponsorship between CUC and the CIAA and followed on from the first Quadrennial Sponsorship, which was initiated in 2007.

President and CEO of CUC, Richard Hew, said, “We have had a long relationship with the CIAA which has produced regional and international champion athletes of whom we are extremely proud. The greater pleasure, however, is knowing that for every champion produced there are hundreds of Caymanians who are better citizens today because they participated in the CIAA programme that built character in their developing years. For this we congratulate and thank the CIAA Executive, its coaching staff and the numerous volunteers. We look forward to continuing
our support of youth and sports in the years to come.”

At the event, Mr. Hew presented the sponsorship cheque to the President of the CIAA, Dr. Dalton Watler.

“On behalf of the CIAA, athletes, officials, volunteers and parents, it gives me great pleasure to be part of this partnership. It is well known that in order for athletes to be successful, dedication, hard work, parents support and financial backing are very important. We are very fortunate to have CUC as a major sponsor and we are looking forward to a stronger relationship in years to come,” Dr. Watler stated.

The Cayman Islands track and field team will travel to St Kitts & Nevis for the CARIFTA meet which will take place over the Easter weekend.
