Cayman: Department of Agriculture announces capture of raccoon

The Department of Agriculture (DoA) has announced that the missing raccoon which escaped in the Republix Plaza area of West Bay from a shipping container was captured today (Tuesday, November 2).

The raccoon, which was found in the same vicinity, is the second of two which escaped on October 22. The other one was captured on the day it escaped.

“In responding to a tip from a bus driver, five DoA team members from animal welfare, animal control and the Veterinary Services Unit attended the area where the animal was spotted and captured it,” stated Brian Crichlow, Assistant Director, DoA.

Mr. Crichlow further stated, “The team at DoA and all the agencies involved in the search are relieved that the animal has been caught. We are grateful to the bus driver who saw the animal, stopped his bus, reported it and waited until our team arrived. His quick actions were integral in us capturing the animal.

The Department of Agriculture worked in conjunction with Department of Environment in the search for the raccoon.

Samples from the first captured raccoon were sent to the United States for testing and full results are pending.
