The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) has seen a rise in the number of propane gas cylinders appearing at the landfill. These pressurized cylinders represent a risk to DEH staff and the public and need to be handled and stored correctly.

DEH in collaboration with Clean Gas and Home Gas have initiated a scheme to ensure proper treatment of their pressurized gas cylinders (and ‘orphaned’ cylinders).

 DEH advises the public that persons should deliver any unwanted cylinders to either Clean Gas or Home Gas dependent on where the cylinders originated. If the cylinder’s origin is uncertain, the cylinder can be taken to either company. They can then be assessed for reuse or made safe for recycling.

DEH stresses that members of the public should not put these in the garbage nor to bring them to the landfill for disposal. If not quickly identified in the garbage, a cylinder could be damaged by waste handling equipment thereby putting workers and the public at risk.

Members of the public are asked to consider the welfare of DEH staff when disposing of garbage. (GIS)
