Cayman: Campers Learn to STOP NOW AND PLAN (SNAP) to manage emotions

Grand Cayman, 20 July 2022 –   Twenty-eight children can now use the SNAP strategy confidently for positive decision making after attending the Family Resource Centre’s fifth annual SNAP camp from 10-15 July 2022. SNAP, short for Stop Now and Plan, is an evidence-based clinical programme that teaches children ages 6 through 11 how to regulate their emotions and make good choices.

Each morning, the camp began with an active discussion about the theme of the day, which included Emotions, Character Strengths, Anti-Bullying, Good Sportsmanship and Perseverance. Campers were divided into groups by age and gender, and were led through interactive discussions and educational activities by FRC staff members to reinforce the skills outlined in the SNAP framework. The title of “Star Snapper” was given to one camper from each group every day to reward exemplary behaviour and application of the SNAP skill within their daily activities.

The camp also featured special activities and incentives in the afternoons such as laser tag, crafts, SNAP Olympics and a special trip to the skate park at Grand Harbour.  “SNAP is one of our most successful programmes and we were happy to be able to offer the curriculum in a fun, relaxed format”, said FRC Clinical Supervisor Charmaine Miller. “Each topic we covered is part of the proven framework and we saw notable progress in a very short time among our campers. We are extremely confident that they will not only apply what they have learned to their home and school environments, but educate their peers and relatives as well”, she added.

The SNAP curriculum is adaptable for both classroom and clinical settings. Parents who wish to have their child participate in the classroom may contact their school counsellor or visit the SNAP webpage at https://www.dcs.gov.ky/frc/family-resource-centre-snap. Families who would like to participate in the clinical programme can register online athttps://www.dcs.gov.ky/frc/family-resource-center-workshop-screening-form.
