BT woman guilty of forged bills

counterfeit-fake-billSharon Ebanks from Bodden Town was found guilty of four offenses relating to counterfeit cash by a jury on Friday (6).

Ebanks was convicted of possessing and using a forged CI$10 bill in the Evaglow bar in Bodden Town in and possessing more than 40 partially printed CI$25 bills. She was also found guilty of possession of equipment that could be used for  counterfeiting. This included paper, a copier, metallic pens, a counterfeit detection pen and the same types of metal strips used in Cayman Islands Monetary Authority currency at her home in Bodden Town.

Ebanks shared the home with her boyfriend, Shane Bodden, She had pleaded “Not Guilty” to all the charges insisting she had not known the $10 bill was a forgery, she had not known about the hidden counterfeit bills that police found in a magazine on a shelf in the bathroom of her home.

Ebanks had claimed the forged note had been given to her at Foster’s Food Fair despite the equipment and other counterfeit notes being found at her home.

The judge had directed the jury they could only find Ebanks guilty if they were sure Ebanks knew the money used in the Evaglow bar was forged or not and whether she knew about the other counterfeit notes and the counterfeiting equipment.

It took the jury three hours to reach a guilty verdict. Sentencing was scheduled for February 2014 and Ebanks was bailed until then.
