1141Abstract painting is a style of painting that fools many people into believing that the creative process behind it is simple. However, the most challenging aspect of painting an abstract image is to create depth and visual tension through unusual effects, without losing the interest of the viewer or disturbing the balance of the overall composition. The best introduction to this process is an abstract studio, where you can be as messy as you want using the different techniques of mixed media and where you can observe the sometimes unexpected results obtained by other students.

Ms Carriou will introduce students to a selection of media and tools that create different textures, such as gels, paste, industrial paint and sand. These materials and visuals will be provided to encourage students to explore mediums and develop a sense of composition and balance in the distribution of colours, textures and forms. Occasionally, videos introducing abstract artists and mouvements will be shown to complement the exploration of this style of painting.

This course is for beginners to intermediate painters (no complete beginners in drop-in sessions please).

A French national, Solenn Carriou is the daughter of a well-established French painter; she was, therefore, effectively born with a paintbrush in her hand. She has attended numerous art courses in the United States, culminating in the studio of Canadian artist Lydia Panart at the Avenue Road Art School of Toronto, where she learned the various techniques of Abstract Painting.
