Australia’s 7-Eleven isn’t in a good place right now.

The convenience store and petrol station chain posted a meme to their Facebook page in an attempt to connect with the young’uns and it really blew up in their face, according to Fairfax Media.

The meme in question is a photo of someone being treated to a lovely dinner outside a 7-Eleven store, with a Slurpee and donut as the main course. The caption reads, “When pay day hasn’t come but you want to spoil bae…” which, following the reaction to it, could nab the coveted award for Best Way to Get Yourself Fired for 2015.

Screen Shot 2015-11-05 at 7.52.45 AMYou see, 7-Eleven has been dealing with a massive scandal in recent months. It has been accused of substantially underpaying workers in an investigation by current affairs program 4 Corners. This meme was pretty poor form in context.

The meme was intended to be a promotional post for the franchise’s upcoming “7-Eleven Day,” where the stores offer free Slurpees or coffees with a regular purchase. In the Facebook post, 7-Eleven asked for people to create their own memes celebrating the day, and offered a cash prize of A$711 to the one it deemed the best.

“I can win $711? That’s almost a month’s wage for a 7-Eleven employee,” one commenter wrote, according to Fairfax Media.

“Any claims made by staff regarding pay are currently being investigated by an independent panel,” the moderator of the page posted in reply. “Several cases have been resolved to date. We are working to make this right as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

The post has since been taken down and 7-Eleven have issued an apology, but the backlash has been strong.

Benjamin Callow, a commenter on Facebook, wrote, “I’m still boycotting all of your stores and products until you can give an explanation and compensation to the workers your franchise holders have taken advantage of, and I encourage others to do the same.”

Maybe, in future, they should just stick to posting lyrics from “7/11” by Beyoncé instead. Young and hip kids love that song.
