Prime Minister Terrance Drew Discusses the Progress of the Federation with IMF Deputy Managing Director Bo Li

Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, February 16, 2024 (Press Secretary, PMO) – On Thursday, February 15, 2024, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew had a productive meeting with Deputy Managing Director Bo Li and his team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), including Executive Director, IMF, Philip Jennings. This meeting set the stage for discussions ahead of the 107th Meeting of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Monetary Council.

Also present at the meeting was the Financial Secretary, Mrs, Hilary Hazel, and the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office Naeemah Hazelle. 

Director Bo Li underscored St. Kitts and Nevis’ strong progress made on climate adaptation and resilience building and reiterated that the IMF is committed to supporting ECCU member countries, including through policy advice, technical assistance, and lending. He expressed his gratitude for the “constructive discussions on the potential benefits of Saint Kitts and Nevis’ large renewable energy resources and ongoing policy initiatives to build a sustainable island nation”

During the meeting, Prime Minister Drew highlighted the significant strides made by the Federation towards achieving the sustainable island state agenda. He discussed various initiatives including the implementation of good governance laws, groundbreaking renewable energy projects, advancements in water management, technological innovations, and enhancements to the Citizenship by Investment program. Additionally, efforts to bolster the tourism sector through increased flights, cruise ship visits, and stayover tourism were also emphasized.

Prime Minister Drew stated that the objective is to “look at the long-term sustainability of the Federation, to diversify the economy so that we can build resilience against external shocks, create more opportunities for our citizens, and foster inclusive growth that benefits all sectors of society.”

“We want to invest in initiatives that will transform St. Kitts and Nevis. Our vision is to create a thriving and diversified economic landscape that not only enhances our global competitiveness but also ensures the well-being and prosperity of future generations”, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew added.
