Youth Flex Hits 500

Teenagers celebrated the 500th episode of the Youth Flex radio show on Wednesday, 5 September with cake, special guests and more of the same fun, informative programming for which they are known.

This week’s anniversary show was also a homecoming event, as many former hosts and participants showed up to mark the occasion.

A special guest was Miss Teen Cayman Islands Nordania Stewart, who made her first public appearance since being sashed last Saturday night. The hosts for the current season are Brianna Moore, Shennique Seales, Tamiyah Ebanks, Aolani Watson and Henry Hill.

The participants and alumni, some of whom are now in tertiary studies, expressed thanks for the opportunity to express their opinions on a range of issues and venture in to the broadcast field.

For many of them, communications has become a lasting interest, and a career option. Production of the show gives the hosts experience in choosing themes, conducting interviews and selecting appropriate music.

Since its launch on September 26, 2001, “The Flex” has seen dozens of students take to the microphone as the show airs live each Wednesday from 4-5:00p.m on Radio Cayman. They are now in Season 32 – appropriately themed “Unity”.

An early offshoot of an National Youth Policy’s recommendation for louder youth ‘voices’, the weekly show is managed by the Youth Services Unit, with the cooperation of public and private high schools, the government radio station, and private sponsors.
