Verdicts returned in deaths of Jamaican couple in Cayman Islands

Unlawful KillingFrom RJR News

A coroner’s jury in Cayman, considering the death of a Jamaican couple two years ago, returned verdicts on Friday after hearing evidence about the couple’s volatile and abusive relationship.

They found that 21 year-old Nichelle Anna-Kay Thomas died from multiple chop wounds and the manner of death was unlawful killing.

For 39 year-old Devon Roy Campbell, the jurors found that the cause of death was hanging. His death was ruled a suicide.

The jury of three men and four women heard evidence over three days.

Miss Thomas’s body was found on February 9, 2014, in a closet at the Bodden Town home where she worked as a part-time helper.

The police found Mr. Campbell’s body hanging from a tree in the back yard.

The couple reportedly met in Jamaica when Ms. Thomas was 17 and still in high school. She went to Cayman in May 2012 and lived with Mr. Campbell.

The jurors heard that Mr. Campbell was jealous and controlling, and various witnesses testified that they had heard him threaten to kill her, for various reasons, particularly if she tried to leave him.
