President Donald Trump launched an after-midnight Twitter attack Thursday on Sen. Mitt Romney after the Utah Republican cast his party’s sole guilty vote in Trump’s impeachment trial and delivered an impassioned speech and media interviews to explain the reasons for his decision Wednesday.

Trump also included a dig at his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, calling him “faltering.”

“Had failed presidential candidate @MittRomney devoted the same energy and anger to defeating a faltering Barack Obama as he sanctimoniously does to me, he could have won the election,” Trump tweeted. “Read the Transcripts!”

Trump’s tweet comes after Romney Wednesday afternoon broke ranks with the rest of Senate Republicans, making his announcement on the Senate floor that he would vote to convict Trump on one of the counts of impeachment, abuse of office, while voting not guilty on the other charge of obstruction of Congress.

Trump also Wednesday night tweeted a video lambasting Romney as a “Democrat secret asset.”

In addition to making his announcement publicly, Romney conducted interviews with The AtlanticThe Washington PostThe New York Times, and Fox News, with all of the interviews embargoed until after he told the Senate about his decision.

Romney acknowledged during his interviews that he would come under fire from his fellow Republicans, including Trump. Several attacks did ensue, writes CNN’s Brian Stelter, pointing out that several conservative pundits were quick to pan Romney.

Fox Business Network’s Lou Dobbs said Romney will be “associated with Judas, Brutus, and Benedict Arnold forever,” Stelter reported, and Fox News’ Tucker Carlson declared Romney will go “unnamed” on his show, as “silly moral preening should not be rewarded.”

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, meanwhile, called him the “ultimate selfish, preening, self-centered politician” and said she may consider challenging him for his Utah Senate seat.

Trump’s oldest son Donald Jr. also lambasted Romney on Carlson’s show, calling the senator a “coward” who is jealous that he lost his bid for the presidency in 2012.
