The Brooklyn, New York-based Everybody’s magazine, a Caribbean-themed publication has named Caribbean American New York City Council Member Jumaane D. Williams as its “Person of the Year” for 2018.

Everybody’s, which is owned and published by Grenadian Herman Hall,  on Wednesday said that Williams, the son of Grenadian immigrants and a candidate for Public Advocate in New York City, is the 40th recipient of the magazine’s annual “Person of the Year: award.

The award was first bestowed in 1978, a year after establishment, on the undisputed Calypso Queen of the World, Calypso Rose.

“The highly-respected Councilman Williams emerged as the most popular, admired and industrious person in New York City and across Caribbean-America,” said the magazine in naming Williams, representative for the 45thCouncil District in Brooklyn.

“But Williams is not Everybody’s ‘Person of the Year’ for the above reasons,” it added. “He is the ‘People’s Person of the Year’ because he is very visible throughout the ‘Big Apple’, and embodies the aspirations of his constituents and the vibrant Caribbean-New York Community.”

The magazine said Williams won from a group of “suggested nominees put forth” by its readership and prominent Caribbean-Americans  in the New York community.

Williams, 42, told the Caribbean Media Corporation that he was gratified in receiving the honor.

“Growing up, Everybody’s magazine was essential reading for me, and I’m humbled to receive this honor,” he said. “This publication has continued to resonate throughout the Caribbean community here in my district and around the nation.

“It is deeply meaningful to see my face in its pages and to have my work recognized in this way,” Williams added. “I promise to continue to do my best to support and strengthen Caribbean-Americans and our culture in all of my work.

“Thank you to Herman Hill and everyone at the magazine for this incredible recognition, and here’s to many years more of success for Everybody’s Magazine,” he continued.

Everybody’s said previous recipients of the award included the late Nobel Laureate Sir Arthur Lewis of St. Lucia; Prime Minister Tom Adams of Barbados; Prime Minister Dame Eugenia Charles of Dominica; late Caribbean American Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm; and late US Congressman Mervyn Dymally of Trinidad and Tobago.
