University College of the Cayman Islands Partners with Cayman Enterprise City for STEM Summer Camp

George Town, Grand Cayman – In recognition of the key role youth plays towards charting society’s course into the future, the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) is partnering with Cayman Enterprise City (CEC) to host a STEM Summer camp from the 21st – 23rd of August. The camp for students between the ages of 14 – 16 is designed to provide students opportunities to engage in STEM-related activities, connect with like-minded individuals and attend the STEM Carib 2017 conference, learn about current trends in STEM fields as well as interact with some local and international STEM experts and explore future career possibilities.

The camp has an action-packed agenda which includes App development, coding, robotics, astronomy, math, chemistry and environmental science, and attendees are in for a treat. Students who possess STEM Ambassador skills such as a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, a willingness to learn, an enquiring mind and a sense of creativity were invited to apply for a place. Attendance to the camp entitles the students to also receive a free full conference pass for the STEM Carib 2017 conference on October 10-13, 2017.

UCCI has a long-standing partnership with Cayman Enterprise City which encourages youths to become interested in STEM initiatives, and CEC will sponsor and provide funding for this August’s STEM Camp, as well as provide coders from the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to run the coding section. The camp is another initiative that demonstrates UCCI’s and CEC’s commitment to work cohesively to develop a local pool of talented, tech-savvy young Caymanians to fill forecasted technology related jobs in CEC.

According to UCCI President Roy Bodden, the STEM Summer Camp taps into a growing reservoir of talent among young Caymanians as they prepare careers in a modernized society. “I am excited to pilot the STEM Summer Camp that UCCI is hosting in partnership with Cayman Enterprise City. It gives us the opportunity to reach out to younger cohorts of students while they are still at the age where they can appreciate what science, technology, engineering, and mathematics mean to modernity.” President Bodden also went on to thank the CEC for their support over the years, adding, “I want to express gratitude to CEC for their willingness to support this initiative, and for being our partner in promoting STEM education from the inception of the inaugural STEM Conference in 2012.”

CEC CEO Charlie Kirkconnell amplified President Bodden’s sentiment, adding, “This is an excellent camp that UCCI has put together for teenage students interested in STEM, and we are delighted to be part of it. This camp perfectly aligns with our goal of encouraging and supporting young Caymanians to consider future careers STEM fields, including those in computer programming.”
