The Maples Group launches in-house environmental committee

Beach Clean UpThe Maples Environmental Committee launched its official “Green Day” on 30 May, with an environmental presentation by the National Trust and eco-friendly goodie bags containing reusable water bottles and a wholesome green apple for each member of staff. Committee members Chelsea Rivers, Danielle Look Loy, Edeona Martin, Karen Watson, Mary Stewart, Michelle O’Mahony, Morven Bodden, Tracy Mulvihill and Wendy Ebanks organised the launch and greeted staff alongside Maples and Calder’s COO and committee sponsor, Karie Bergstrom, and Managing Partner, Paul Lumsden.

The Green Day launch was well received and welcomed staff members across Maples and Calder and MaplesFS.

Following the success of its launch, the committee coordinated its first beach clean-up on 1 June, at Barker’s Beach in West Bay, in partnership with the Cayman Islands Department of Environmental Health (DEH) and local recycling group, JUNK.

In line with the Maples Environmental Committee’s mandate to gradually transform the Maples group into a fully environmentally friendly organisation, Maples and Calder (following the example set by MaplesFS) unveiled another effort on Friday, 30 May, removing the majority of plastic and Styrofoam from the firm’s lunchroom and introducing ceramic plates and silverware. This followed a recycling initiative implemented several weeks ago and the removal of most single-use plastic water bottles from the boardrooms, which were replaced with glass water jugs. The committee has worked behind the scenes to make other small changes, including switching to LED lights and timer switches.

MaplesEcoTeam-MCStaff members were encouraged to sign the group’s “Go Green! Pledge”, which outlined ways in which persons could take responsibility for their own carbon footprint, both in their professional and personal lives. The Maples Environmental Committee also held a competition, inspiring staff to submit suggestions for the next green initiative which might be undertaken. Winners Alma Connor and Joan Murphy (MaplesFS) each received a set of three recycling bins for their homes.

“The Maples group is very supportive of the formation of our internal environmental committee, and we feel that it is our duty as corporate citizens to help raise awareness within our own group and expect that each individual will play a part in the preservation of our environment,” said Paul Lumsden. “The Maples Environmental Committee has done an incredible job of getting the staff involved in recycling and staging various events to elevate everyone’s understanding of other ways to be environmentally conscious.”
