Sex is not only pleasurable, it’s good for your health. Experts say that your sex drive can stay high even in your senior years. But all too often, we lose energy as we age and this affects every aspect of our lives, from the boardroom to the bedroom.

“Never think that a lack of energy means an end to your sex life, and there is nothing you can do about it,” says Dr. Sharon Bober, director of the Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Sexual Health Program. In fact, having sex can actually boost your energy levels as well as other aspects of well-being.

Here are some benefits:

  • Better sleep. According AARP, sex helps us sleep more soundly because arousal and orgasm release oxytocin, also called the “cuddle hormone,” and reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
  • More youthful appearance. Research shows that couples who have sex three times weekly appear 10 years younger, according to research done by David Weeks, a neuropsychologist at Scotland’s Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
  • Reduces risk of prostate cancer. According to Harvard Health, several studies have found that high ejaculation frequency was linked to a 31% decreased risk of prostate cancer.
  • Fewer headaches. German researchers found that having regular sex reduced the frequency of migraines, according to AARP. Sixty percent of the participants said it reduced or halted their pain.
  • Stronger relationships. A 2014 study showed that even after 40 years of marriage, couples who were sexually active were happier and more content in their marriages. The authors noted that sex doesn’t have to mean sexual intercourse, but rather the physical contact between two people.

“In the field of sex therapy, we no longer regard sex as an act, but rather as an experience,” Dr. Judy Kuriansky, Ph.D. a leading psychologist and author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to a Healthy Relationship,” tells Newsmax. “It’s important to include the buildup and the aftermath as part of the sexuality involved in intimacy. Sex, like any form of exercise, helps build energy and stamina. So, after a brief rest period, use the renewed energy to get creative with your partner.”
