The Editor Speaks: Cayman’s #1 story – Jeffrey Webb

Colin Wilsonweb2The name of Jeffrey Webb once was taken with pride. The man who had it all. The prince who was going to turn the tarnished name of the world’s #1 sport into a new regime of honesty and openness.

He was respected and soon he would be the head of FIFA. Time was fast running out for Blatter and Blatter had openly said Jeff was the man who would replace him.

Then the news came. Webb had been arrested along with his friend and former Cayman resident Costas Takaas. The charges were horrific. Everything Webb had said he was on a mission to stamp out.

I didn’t believe it and the vast majority of us here didn’t either. There was some mistake.

We were all wrong.

And it was worse than we could ever have dreamed.

Charges were laid against him as being involved in the Canover Watson affair and listening to what is being said at this ongoing trial Webb would seem to be at the heart of it. And Watson and Webb were both close friends. They even had houses close by in the USA.

Webb agreed to be extradited to the USA. The first one of the many others who had all been arrested too in Sweden.

That was the turning point for me and the doubts I had became certainty. Webb was indeed guilty as the US authorities were saying. He was going to sing to save his neck.

And he has. And he has pleaded guilty. And one of his crimes was to take money earmarked for the poor.

And why were we deceived? He once worked for the loathsome Jack Warner and took over from him. It was the same guard, just a different name.

We were deceived because Jeff had a commanding voice and charisma. And we wanted to believe.

He comes from a well respected family here – the Webbs. He was a banker. He put Cayman football on the map as soon as he became president of CIFA.

On the map? Cayman is marked as being corrupt and Webb has blackened its name. CIFA is in a mess and the bodies running it want to hold on to the purse strings. Why?

And that my friends is the biggest story of the year in Cayman. Worldwide we are now confirmed as being rich with corruption. President Obama did his best with his nonsense but Webb has nailed the coffin lid tight in world opinion.

Thank you Mr. Webb. May you rot in hell.
