The proposed cruise ship berthing facility has occupied all our news over the past twelve months and more, and more…..

It will still occupy our news for many, many weeks, whilst we also wait for the referendum question government are going to provide.

I wonder how that will be worded?

I wonder how many of the people behind the referendum will be pleased with the question when it comes?

It will no doubt be a burning question……

And that neatly brings me back to the fires recently burning at our George Town landfill.

Do you remember when the burning question was when will we have a new Integrated Solid Waste Management System?

In 2016 and 2017 it was the hottest topic on our lips. In 2018 the fire was dampened down to be almost extinct. A brief flame when we had the tyre shredding with even our premier throwing a few old tyres into the shredder. But only when the cameras were present.

Apart from the cruise ship berthing facility beginning to fire up we were informed that a Dart-led group had been awarded the responsibility for the implementation of the waste management system. Government gave a sigh of relief, and for them that was the end of their worries.

What has happened since?

Nothing but discussions. When I asked I was told the discussions are still ongoing. I was told last year the discussions would be completed March 2019 ……??

There is obviously a lot of waste to discuss but hopefully not a waste of time.

Still, things are become greener and maybe we won’t need such a huge Integrated Solid Waste Management System….? Plastic straws are being phased out in place of paper ones.

What about all those trees that have had to be chopped down?

Supermarkets are being praised for stocking plastic-free wooden toothbrushes, reusable water bottles, and canvas produce bags. Those thin plastic bags are still there but we have to pay a few pence if we want to use them.

The big joke is nothing has changed in the supermarkets with all the plastic packaging displaying all the goods for sale on the shelves.

Have you stopped wasting food? You had better. I don’t think we are going to get our Integrated Solid Waste Management System next year. We had better get used to more landfill fires.
