The Caribbean Writer calls for submissions for Volume 31

caribbean_writer_artThe Caribbean Writer, an international, refereed, literary journal with a Caribbean focus, has announced a submission call for its 31st edition. Issues unique to the Caribbean should be central to the work, or the work should reflect a Caribbean heritage, experience or perspective.

The theme of Volume 31 is: “New Vistas: An Evolving Caribbean.” The journal welcomes short stories, essays, poems, interviews, personal narratives and one-act plays highlighting this theme.

Individuals are encouraged to submit poems (five maximum), short stories or personal essays on general topics or on the theme. Only previously unpublished work will be considered. (If self-published, give details.) Include brief biographical information and list all contact information plus title of manuscript on a separate page. Only the title should appear on the manuscript.

All submissions are eligible for these prizes: The Virgin Islands Daily News Prize for a fiction or nonfiction essay to an author residing in the U.S. or British Virgin Islands ($500); The Canute A. Brodhurst Prize for best short fiction ($400); The David Hough Literary Prize to a Caribbean author ($500); The Marvin E. Williams Literary Prize to an emerging Caribbean author ($500); The Cecile de Jongh Literary Prize to a Caribbean author whose work best expresses the spirit of the Caribbean ($500); and The Charlotte and Isidor Paiewonsky Prize for a first-time publication in The Caribbean Writer ($250).

E-mail submissions to [email protected] as an attached Word or RTF file. Submissions may also be mailed to: The Caribbean Writer, University of the Virgin Islands, RR 1, Box 10,000, Kingshill St. Croix, VI 00850-9781. Include SASE for response. The submission deadline is Dec. 31, 2016.

The Caribbean Writer is also soliciting colorful, eye-catching, Caribbean artwork for the cover of the 31st issue, as well. Artists who want their artwork to be considered for use should submit electronic files in vertical format as TIF or JPEG files with a resolution of 300 dpi or greater.

Black and white art (line drawings, sketches, block prints, etc.) is also needed for use inside the 300-page publication. Vertical format is also preferred for these submissions in TIF or JPEG format with resolution of 300 dpi or greater.

Please include all necessary contact information and a brief biographical note with art submissions. The deadline for artwork submission is also Dec. 31, 2016.
