Original story

Sharn Mentz and Joseph Curley set out on Friday (2) at 3am on their paddleboards, with the aim of circumnavigating Grand Cayman. The 70 mile journey will take two full days of paddling.

They are going north, paddled around West Bay and reached Barkers.

Conditions were ok but not great when they departed. They sent a message saying they will “have a headwind of about 12knts almost all the way from Barkers to East end on the first day, the second day from East End coming around the southern side of the Island we will have an even stronger wind but it will be at our backs.”

After 3hours they had covered 14.5 miles.

Their attempt to go around the whole of Grand Cayman on their stand up paddle boards is to raise funds and awareness to help feed the children of the Cayman Islands that are in need.

Sharn and Mentz left Surfside on Seven Mile Beach and that is where they hope to return safely on Saturday (3). Anticipated time of arrival is between 3pm and 7pm.

Organisers are planning a closing event at Surfside on Saturday to welcome back the paddleboarders and give the public the chance to lend their support and donate to the campaign.

Sharn Mentz is a dentist, originally from South Africa, and has been living in the Cayman Islands for four and a half years.

Joseph Curley is an electrician from Canada, and has been living in the Cayman islands for five years.
