Service Clubs Tackling Recycling Awareness

Cans in TrashRecycling bins have become more prominent in Cayman in the past couple of years but how many residents are truly doing their part to keep recyclable items out of the trash? With the recent garbage pickup problems, it would seem if the amount of trash were reduced there would be less waste to pick up. Not to mention doing the right thing for the environment and teaching the next generation how to take care of our beautiful country.

Tackling this awareness problem head on is a joint initiative by the Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions service clubs. This joint effort came as a result of all club presidents recognizing a need to raise the bar with recycling education and awareness.

One club member stated “Recycling is something that happens daily by residents in other countries so why isn’t Cayman residents doing the same thing? Mainly because most residents are unaware of what can be recycled today and where they can recycle these items. We plan to change this with education and to encourage everyone to do their part in keeping Cayman beautiful.”

This community service initiative is the first of its kind where all the service clubs have banded together on a cause they felt needed the strength of all club members. The big awareness launch is taking place on Saturday, November 2 where members from each of the service clubs will be providing information at each of the grocery stores from 7am to 1pm. Participating in the “Join In” efforts are Foster’s, Hurley’s, Kirk’s and Priced Right.

In anticipation of the big day, the service clubs have already released their Facebook page that is filled with information for residents to use. They are encouraging residents to LIKE their page to stay connected to recent updates and information about recycling in Cayman. www.facebook.com/joininky

More information about the joint “Join In” recycling initiative will become available in the coming weeks. One Rotary Sunrise member had this encouraging statement to share “Join in, recycle and make Cayman a better place”.
