Scotiabank robbed in broad daylight

photo taken of get away car by cruise ship passenger

Shortly before 11.45 yesterday (3 May)  three masked men, two of whom were armed with what appeared to be firearms, entered Scotiabank in Cardinal Avenue, George Town.

The RCIPS acted quickly and were on the scene within minutes but not before the robbers, made off in a dark blue coloured Honda Saloon license plate 138-805. The car had been parked, with a waiting driver, directly outside the bank.

The car was then seen to drive off towards the Eastern Avenue area.

The police said no shots were fired but they threatened staff and customers before making off with an undisclosed sum of cash.

Police officers found the car abandoned in Bronze Road a short time after the robbery. Bronze Road is located behind the church of the New Testament off North Sound Road.

The suspects are described as follows:

  • Male, approximately 6ft 3 inches in height, dark coloured skin, stocky build, wearing a light blue hooded top, dark blue jeans
  • Male, approximately 5ft 7 inches in height, slim build, wearing a black hood and a brown/grey plaid print jacket, dark trousers
  • Male, approximately 5ft 7 inches in height, stocky build.

There is no description available at this time of the getaway driver.

CITN-Cayman27 reported that their crews spoke to a cruise passenger who took a picture of the robbers get away car and said two of the robbers had small handguns.

The police have issued a copy of this photograph (shown) that shows one of the suspects entering the get away car. Officers are appealing to anyone else who was in the area and took photos of the suspects, or the car, to contact them.

Cardinal Avenue was busy at the time of the robbery. Anyone who was in the downtown George Town area and witnessed the crime, or the car/ suspects arriving at or leaving the scene, is asked to contact the RCIPS. In addition, anyone who was in the Bronze Road area and saw the suspects abandon the vehicle are asked to come forward

It has been over a year (March 2011) since the last bank robbery (CIBC First Caribbean Bank in Plaza Venezia) here and then it was two of the bank’s customers that were robbed and not the bank itself.

Anyone with information about the robbery or the car is asked to call George Town police station on 949-4222, the RCIPS tip-line 949-7777 or CrimeStoppers 800-8477 (Tips).
