Reuters journalists captured rare footage of some of the men and women in Myanmar who left their lives as civilians to become guerilla fighters after the military coup in February. “Taking up arms is the only option for us” said a 34-year-old former fitness trainer, a new recruit who has a tattoo of ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi across his back.

On the other side of the world, democracy thrived. The streets of Santiago were filled with supporters of Gabriel Boric celebrating the Chilean leftist’s victory in Chile’s presidential runoff election. The election was the most divisive in decades, with both candidates posing diametrically opposing alternatives to the centrist political mainstream that has dominated Chile since the return to democracy in 1990.
