Recycling facilities now available as Cayman Islands Yacht Club goes green

_CIYC-9284Furthering its commitment to protecting Cayman’s natural environment, the Cayman Islands Yacht Club is expanding it’s recycling efforts and is now a recycling drop-off location for all members of the general public. Bins are available for cardboard, plastic, aluminium and glass, helping to reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste and keep Cayman clean and green.

Members of the public can drop off recyclables at clearly marked bins within the Cayman Islands Yacht Club at 164 Yacht Drive, Grand Cayman whilst boat users will find it easy to dispose of waste from charters and fishing tours as soon as they dock.

Sheldon Reid, Manager at the Cayman Islands Yacht Club says that he is very excited about the new facility. “We’re really proud of the efforts being made to recycle island wide and delighted that we’re able to offer a drop of facility here in the Yacht Club and do our bit to help. As a boating facility we rely on the environment so it makes sense for us to do everything we can to protect it. Every boat that comes in is carrying waste and we want to see as little of that as possible going to the landfill.” Environmentalists report that landfill can lead to runoff, which can find its way into the oceans, and harm marine life, so the importance of reducing the amount of litter pollution on a small island surrounded by water seems obvious.

By providing the bins, the Yacht Club hopes to make it easy for local residents to join the recycling effort. Its location allows easy access from the Easterly Tibbets Highway and the residential homes within Yacht Drive, Vista Del Mar and Salt Creek, as well as plentiful parking.

Operations Manager Karl Noble noted that the Cayman Islands Yacht Club is all about going green and is thrilled to be working with Government and the local community to continue and expand what has already started. “It’s a growing operation and we hope to do more in the future to reduce the impact that we have on our beautiful island.” He stated.

Items accepted at the recycling drop off are:
– Glass
– Plastics
– Alluminim
– Paper and Cardboard
– Small batteries
All containers should be washed and lids should be discarded.
