| One of the memorable meetings our team had at the recently concluded Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) Caribbean Travel Marketplace was with a preeminent hotelier from Grenada. Leo Garbutt is the proprietor of Calabash Luxury Boutique Hotel in Grenada, one of the leading hotels in the Caribbean. The 2020 CHTA Caribbean Hotelier of the Year has a passion for people and the Grenadian community, and his establishment goes to great lengths to ensure his staff have a happy disposition so they can lead enjoyable and productive lives at work and at home. This approach has impacted the guest experience positively, and there’s little wonder why this property is a jewel in the Caribbean crown of hotels and resorts. The self-taught Garbutt began his hotel career by chance when a delayed flight to his native United Kingdom landed him in the Calabash Hotel in 1986. That led him to fall in love with the island and the hotel, and the rest, as they say, is history. The member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE)is one of the region’s passionate advocates for tourism and hospitality, which he believes should be a first career choice – and not a last resort – for the region’s young people.
