New IOC social media guidelines to increase opportunities for athletes at Paris 2024 and Gangwon 2024

11 January 2024 – The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has released its official Social and Digital Media Guidelines for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 and the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Gangwon 2024, with athletes given more opportunities to share their Olympic journey with fans and peers across their personal digital platforms.

The Guidelines have been designed following a consultation process with stakeholders, in particular Media Rights-holders (MRHs), and incorporating feedback from athletes based on experience from previous Olympic Games editions. The Guidelines will enable athletes to tell their fans about their unique experiences of competing at the Olympic Games while protecting the rights of the MRHs.

Developing new connections

Athletes participating at Paris 2024 will now also be able to post on their personal social media accounts audio and video recordings of up to two minutes per post from:

  • the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and/or at the Champions Park
  • the Olympic Village
  • competition venues up to one hour before the start of their competition, and after they have left the mixed zone/doping control station
  • their training venues and practice areas.

These Guidelines will apply to all accredited athletes at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, who will be able to benefit from the Guidelines from when the Olympic Village opens on 18 July until it closes on 13 August.

Guidelines for other accredited persons

For the first time, the IOC has decided to release two different sets of Social Media Guidelines: one for athletes and one for other accredited persons, in order to provide athletes with more opportunities.

All other individuals accredited to the Olympic Games Paris 2024, including coaches, technical staff, entourage members, team officials, volunteers, personnel of National Olympic Committees (NOCs), International Federations (IFs) or the Organising Committee and other team personnel who take part in the Games, must comply with the “IOC Social and Digital Media Guidelines for Accredited Individuals other than Athletes Participating at the Olympic Games Paris 2024”.

Helping young athletes share their story in Gangwon

Along with the new guidelines for Paris 2024, the IOC has released the Social and Digital Media Guidelines for the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024, which will take place from 19 January to 1 February 2024, with approximately 1,900 athletes from around 80 NOCs expected to take part.
