New $10 Banknote in Circulation

(Grand Cayman – Thursday, 12 July 2012) The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) will introduce into circulation the redesigned, and security enhanced, $10 D Series banknote commencing the week of July 16th, 2012.

The new $10 note is predominately red with violet and dark grey highlights and a yellow-green centre. It bears images of crabs on the front and a plume of Wild Banana orchids on the reverse. In addition to the general security features, the $10 note also boasts upgraded security features. One distinctive security feature is the unique ultraviolet reactive image known as the “Gemini”, which in natural light reveals an outlined shell on the back, near the top left-hand corner. Under ultraviolet light, a second colour appears. Each denomination has its own Gemini.

There are, however, other security features that are readily-visible including:

The serial number – This is different for each banknote.

Metallic window security thread – This is a silver band imprinted with the ‘CIMA’ acronym, weaving in and out from top to bottom on the front of the note.

Other features become clearly visible when the $10 note is held up to the light or is tilted. These include:

The turtle watermark – The outline of a turtle is visible when the note is held up.

The ‘CIMA’ Electrotype – Similar to the watermark, the ‘CIMA’ acronym becomes visible when the note is held to the light. On the $10 note, ‘CIMA’ appears horizontally, above the turtle.

Iridescent band – This band runs from top to bottom on the front of the note. The denomination appears within this band when the note is viewed at a shallow angle in the light. For example, ‘$10’ would appear on the $10 note when it is tilted.

Mask– The denomination appears within the dark, lace-patterned circle located to the right of Queen’s portrait when the banknote is held up to the light.

In 2010, all six denominations – $1, $5, $10, $25, $50, and $100 – of the Cayman Islands banknotes were redesigned. Named the “D Series” for the unique serial number beginning with the letter D on the front, each note bears modern designs emphasizing the country’s environmental heritage and includes upgraded security features. The banknotes launched in April 2011 with the $25 and $5 denominations. The $50 and $1 D Series notes were introduced last July.

The final $100 banknote will be put into circulation at a later date.
