Former player to golf for charity in Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands – Retired NBA player Adonal Foyle will be teeing up for charity at a golf tournament which is being held in conjunction with the inaugural Cayman Islands Classic Basketball Tournament. The tourney takes place on Sunday, 19 November at the North Sound Golf Club, and is expected to be an annual event which will benefit three different charities each year. All proceeds from the inaugural staging will go to Meals on Wheels, YMCA of the Cayman Islands and the Cayman Islands Basketball Association Youth Programmes. Registration is open to individuals and teams of four.

Foyle was the eighth overall pick in the 1997 NBA draft, and played a total of 13 seasons, the first ten with the Golden State Warriors and last three with the Orlando Magic. Upon his retirement, he spent two additional seasons with the Magic as their Director of Player Development. A published author, national speaker, and consultant, Foyle currently serves as the Community Ambassador for the World Champion Golden State Warriors.

Originally from the island of St. Vincent, Foyle was adopted at the age of 15 by a couple who were both professors at . He eventually graduated magna cum laude from that institution. While a member of the basketball team, he set an NCAA record with 492 career blocks which was only broken in 2002. During his NBA playing days, Foyle was a defensive specialist, collecting over 3,400 rebounds. He holds the Warriors’ franchise record for blocked shots at 1,140.

The Cayman Islands Classic Basketball Tournament takes place from 20th to 22nd November at the new John Gray High School gymnasium, and will feature the Cincinnati Bearcats, Iowa Hawkeyes, Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns, Wyoming Cowboys, Buffalo Bulls, South Dakota State Jackrabbits, Richmond Spiders and University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers. The teams will play in 12 games over the course of three days. Hundreds of fans, alumni and supporters are expected to travel with each team, and organisers are anticipating at least 1000 visitors to the island.
