Police arrest a man during a road check on Friday (23)

A man has died after he lost control of his car and crashed on Shamrock Road.

Richard Alutaya Rivera, a 39-year-old Fillipino,was driving towards East End near to Watler’s Estates when he skidded off the road and collided with a tree just before 2am Friday morning.

Mr Rivera, who worked at KPS Equipment at East End quarry, was taken to George Town Hospital following the accident shortly before 2am.

Inspector Adrian Barnett said: “Speed was a factor and I can’t say about alcohol because we are still looking.”
Meanwhile police revealed more than 30 people have been arrested on suspicion of DUI during the RCIPS Christmas Cracker crackdown.

Insp Barnett added: “We will be cracking down all times, all places throughout the Christmas and New Year’s Holiday and into 2012.

“It is not just traffic violations but we are looking to disrupt criminal as well. It happens all times of the day, criminals don’t wait until dark.

“We have already had more than 1600 accident in Cayman this year, seven of them fatal.”

On Friday officers set up a road check on Eastern Avenue at the junction with Godfrey Nixon Way.

Within minutes one man was arrested for driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
