Cayman Prep School sweeps the Young Image Makers Short Film Awards.   On Friday, May 31st 2013, students from the Prep School joined other students from across the island for a night of glamour, fun and camaraderie at the Harquail Theatre, as they attended the annual YIM Short Film Awards. Young filmmakers were treated like stars as they arrived in a limousine to the red carpet premiere complete with paparazzi.

This event was the brainchild of the Cayman National Cultural Foundation and the Department of Tourism.  Students in school in the Cayman Islands were invited to submit their funniest, scariest and most thought-provoking short films and music videos for a chance to work with local film professionals and win a trip to the Big Apple.  Students were asked to produce films between one and three minutes in length, filmed with their cameras, phones or other recording devices. The films could be entered in two categories; the “Young Image Makers competition”, for which no topic was specified and could range from comedies to horror films and some documentary-style films and the “Cayman Through My Eyes” section, which showcased the natural wonders of the islands and could include the people, music and culture.

The directors of these films went on to participate in special film- making workshops; they then had the opportunity to improve on their films, or create entirely new ones. Cayman Prep School had numerous entries from Year 6 and three films were chosen to move onto the final round. Those films were Cracking Cayman Coconuts by Harriet Richardson, Cayman Through My Eyes by Ashley Van Der Bol and Cayman Through My Eyes by Lia Piper.  The public was also able to view the films online and cast votes for both competitions. Lia Piper came in second for the People’s Choice, with a whopping 1076 votes.

Harriet Richardson came away with top honours for her film Cracking Cayman Coconuts in the Cayman Through My Eyes competition. The film also won second place in the Young Image Makers. She received a scholarship to the New York Film Academy this summer, where she will spend a week honing her filmmaking skills and learning about the different roles available in the industry.  Lia Piper came in a close second with her film, Cayman Through My Eyes. She won a Sony video camera and various prizes. Congratulations again to all three ladies for all their hard work.
