International Olympic Committee

9 Jul 2022 – The official countdown to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) began yesterday with confirmation that the Olympic Games will take place between 14 and 30 July, and the Paralympic Games from 15 until 27 August.

Speaking about this announcement, five-time Olympic medallist and LA28 Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans said: “The LA28 Games will be unlike any others, showcasing the best of Southern California’s exceptional stadiums and world-class culture to athletes and fans alike. This milestone makes the Games real for every athlete actively training for their LA28 dream, and the fans who follow the journey.”

Building on Evans’ remarks, the Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s LA28 Coordination Commission, Nicole Hoevertsz, who joined IOC President Thomas Bach on a visit to the city yesterday, said: “Los Angeles is a special place for sport. It’s wonderful to see the continued progress of the LA28 Games and especially terrific to witness the positive impact the Games can have on the community, well before the Olympic flame ever reaches American soil.” She continued: “We have much to continue to plan and celebrate as we prepare to deliver the beauty and excitement of sport to the world. The confirmation of the Games dates now gives LA a firm deadline when it will need to be ready to welcome the world.”

The dates, announced by the Organising Committee, confirm the timeline for Los Angeles’ third hosting of the Olympic Games (previously 1932 and 1984), and the first time for the Paralympic Games.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games LA28 will use existing world-class stadiums and sports venues across the Los Angeles region, ensuring a sustainable and fiscally responsible event. The LA28 Games will feature more than 3,000 hours of live sport across 800 events in more than 40 sports. Some 15,000 athletes are expected to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
