A Jamaican hotel worker who was the subject of a scathing article in the UK Mirror yesterday feels his job is now on the line and that his reputation has been ruined.

Caffrey Brown, entertainment coordinator at a hotel in Negril, told THE STAR that he was left “surprised and confused” after reading the story which claimed he fleeced his British fiancEe out of PS10,000 (J$1.6m).

Louise Chesney, 24, told the UK Mirror that she left her 45-year-old man for Brown, whom she met at the hotel.

“She made a mistake and is trying to cover her mistake by painting me in a bad light,” Brown told THE STAR.

Chesney, who said she was left penniless, and her fiancE, Paul, were in Jamaica to plan their dream beach wedding. It was then she met Brown, who she said she spent lots of money on.

However, Brown, who was not interviewed by the Mirror for the story, told THE STAR that Chesney’s account of their relationship is not totally true.

“It is a bunch of lies and false allegations, and I know it is going to affect my job. It is affecting me. People who read it are going to think I am a bad person,” he said. “I am hurting.”

RACKED UP DEBT

Based on the report in the Mirror, Chesney, throughout their year-long relationship, worked six days a week at her minimum-wage care home job to save the PS4,000 she needed for two trips to Jamaica to visit Brown.

Chesney claimed she had to move in with her brother as she has spent so much money on Brown, she was unable to afford her rent. She claimed to have racked up cost paying for a visa for Brown to travel to England, his airfare, a trip to the Ethiad Stadium, and buying him gifts. “I’ve lost everything – I’m thousands of pounds in debt. Yet, I’m still devastated at losing Caffrey because I thought he was the love of my life.”

Brown, however, insists that he did nothing wrong except to have let Chesney into his life.

“I did not dip into her pocket and take out money. She did it on her own,” Brown said.

Chesney, while planning her wedding with Paul, first saw Brown walking along the beach in just his shorts. They met soon afterwards, though Brown insists his only interest was to help her and Paul identify the ideal place for their wedding.

“He shook my hand, and instantly I felt what seemed like a jolt of electricity,” she told The Mirror. “I’ve never had a connection like that with anyone before – even Paul.”

Chesney said that the affair with Brown started when Paul was in bed with a headache. She said Caffrey invited her to a beach party.

“I couldn’t help myself,” she was quoted as saying. “The chemistry between us was insane. Then we kissed. I tried to resist, but I couldn’t.”

However, Brown told a different story. He said that after introducing himself to Chesney earlier that evening, he saw her at the bar and she proceeded to chat him up.

“She said to me, ‘Where is fun tonight?'” Brown recalled.

He said that having told her where he was going, she asked if she could come along.

“I said, ‘It is up to you’,” Brown said of his response.

He said that they partied and even spent some time on the beach, but denied kissing her at that point.

“I gave her a hug. She came on to me and I backed out,” Brown said.

Asked if he had any regrets, Brown responded: “My mistake is that I made contact with her. I was just doing my job; I was just being nice.”

Chesney, according to the Mirror, dumped Paul after they returned to England, but after a year in a relationship with Brown, she became convinced he was cheating and had been using her.
