Jamaica criticizes US deportation policy

Jamaican Ambassador to the US Stephen Vasciane criticized the US government Monday because of the high number of deported people to the Caribbean island, in a report by Jamaican national information agency JIS.

JIS said that every month a total of 75 Jamaican citizens are returned to the island from the US.

“It is a very large figure,” said the Jamaican diplomat referring to the statistic data.

Ambassador Vasciane also questioned the method used by the US government saying that many of those people are sent back to Jamaica but most of them lack any kind of link with their homeland, because they arrived in the US national territory when they children and they grew up in the US.

“Now, many of these people are returned to an unknown territory for them,” said Vasciane, who thinks the US deportation policy starts a cycle of crime, because the people sent to Jamaica without any survival means, are much more prone to commit crimes.

The US government should be more comprehensive and avoid that kind of policy, said the Jamaican Ambassador.

Several Caribbean leaders criticized US Secretary of Justice Eric Holder in the Summit of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)celebrated in Haiti, and even US Vice President Jospeh Biden was interrogated in his recent visit to Trinidad & Tobago about this aspect.

The political class and the communication media of the Caribbean think the US deportation policy and the lack of control of firearms in the nation, provokes an increase of violence in the Caribbean.
