Cocaine destined for Caribbean seized

From Jamaica Gleaner

BOGOTA (AP):

Colombian authorities said they’ve made the biggest cocaine seizure in the history of a country long plagued by traffic in the drug.

The National Police agency said on the weekend that 50 commandos backed by helicopters seized about eight tons of cocaine on a banana plantation in the northwestern department of Antioquia.

It said the drug belonged to a gang known as the Clan Usuaga and was apparently destined for the Caribbean and then to the United States.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos sent a tweet congratulating police on what he called the largest cocaine seizure in the history of Colombia, one of the world’s largest producers of the narcotic. Colombian police said they’ve seized more than 86 tons in all so far this year.

Commonwealth Secretariat wary of Caribbean debt path

From Nationwide Radio jm

The UK based Commonwealth Secretariat is warning the Caribbean that on it’s current path the region is set to record unsustainable levels of debt by 2050.

That was the Secretariats’ conclusion in a recent report titled Achieving a Resilient Future for Small States.

The report is based on an analysis of the debt to GDP ratios of six countries in the region including Jamaica.

It finds that countries in the region have suffered from long standing socio-economic problems which have led to low growth and declining productivity.

This includes high crime, high unemployment particularly among youth, failure to innovate and climate change adaptation.

The report says the region also continues to suffer from economic shocks due to dependencies on fuel and food imports.

It says that if this business as usual continues, 5 of the 6 countries studied, will have growing debt to GDP ratios exceeding one-hundred percent by 2050.

With Jamaica and Barbados predicted to reach a debt to GDP ratio in excess of 2-hundred percent over the same period.

The Commonwealth Secretariat is therefore calling on the region to develop strategies to create enterprising economies where innovation is the driver of productivity.

They are also calling for the proper integration of youth into national development and strategies for tackling crime and environmental sustainability.

US attorney who stole $800k from clients gets prison

By Andrew Keshner, From New York Law Journal

A suspended Manhattan attorney who specialized in trusts and estates and real estate matters will serve 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison after admitting to stealing more than $800,000 in client money.
Acting Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Maxwell Wiley imposed the sentence on John Todorovich, 63, who pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree grand larceny on April 4 and to another count of second-degree grand larceny on April 25.
According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Todorovich stole from two estates for which he was named an executor. He also stole from his client in a real estate deal, who had given Todorovich a $220,000 check to be held in escrow.
The office said Todorovich used the money for purchases such as country club memberships and payments on a Mercedes-Benz.
The Appellate Division, First Department, suspended Todorovich in September 2013, and he now faces mandatory disbarment. He was admitted to the bar in 1979 after graduating from Stetson University College of Law.
Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Gross handled the case for the prosecution, which had recommended a 3-to-9-year sentence in the case.
Todorovich was represented by Louis Freeman of Freeman, Nooter & Ginsberg.
