BBC’s Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and team expelled from North Korea

Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and the team were in North Korea ahead of a rare ruling party congress

BBC correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and his team have been expelled from North Korea after being detained over their reporting.

Our correspondent, producer Maria Byrne and cameraman Matthew Goddard were stopped by officials on Friday as they were about to leave North Korea.

Wingfield-Hayes was questioned for eight hours by North Korean officials and made to sign a statement.

All three remained in Pyongyang before flying to Beijing on Monday.

After arriving in Beijing, Byrne tweeted that they were “very happy” to be back but were not doing any interviews.

The BBC team was in North Korea ahead of the Workers’ Party Congress, accompanying a delegation of Nobel prize laureates conducting a research trip.

The North Korean leadership was displeased with their reports highlighting aspects of life in the capital.

At a news conference on Monday, a North Korean government spokesperson said Wingfield-Hayes and his colleagues had been “speaking very ill of the system”.

A BBC spokesman said: “We are very disappointed that our reporter Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and his team have been deported from North Korea after the government took offence at material he had filed.

“Four BBC staff, who were invited to cover the Workers Party Congress, remain in North Korea and we expect them to be allowed to continue their reporting.”

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (May, 05, 2016) — Special Envoy of the Republic of Italy for Caribbean States, His Excellency Paolo Serpi paid a courtesy call on St. Kitts and Nevis Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Mark Brantley, at the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) office at Bath Hotel on May 05, 2016.

Mr. Brantley told the Department of Information at the end of the visit that the meeting was centred on deep discussions concerning Italy’s bid to be a member of the United Nation’s Security Council.

He explained that there were two available seats in the Council but Italy, Sweden and the Netherlands are vying for the positions and each is making its case.

“We have longstanding relations with all three but certainly a fond relationship with Italy as well and so our purpose for this meeting is really to hear from them whether or not, with our support, they would champion the issues which are of importance to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and the wider Caribbean. So we look forward to this continued debate and discussion,” he said.

Mr. Brantley also noted that they discussed other areas of mutual interest including the issue of blacklisting, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and climate change, a matter which impacts both the Caribbean and Italy, which is made up of a number of islands.

The Foreign Affairs Minister added that they also looked into areas in which Italy could offer scholarships for training and renewable energy initiatives and best practices, since Italy had done well in the area of renewable energy.

Shanique Myrie found not guilty of beating estranged husband

18myrieincourt2011-450x303By Nation News From St Lucia News Online

NATION NEWS – Shanique Myrie was found not guilty of beating her now estranged husband, Troy Pusey, by a court in Harford, Maryland, in the United States on Thursday.

However, Pusey claimed that she used obeah to win the case.

Myrie, 28, became a household name after winning a high-profile case against Barbados in 2011. She faced the court in Hartford, Maryland, after she was charged with assaulting her husband earlier this year.

“He said I chased him down with knife, and I kicked him in his groin. That I punched him on his hand and that he did surgery on, and stuff like that,” Myrie told the STAR.

“He went on the stand and told a bag of lies, contradicting himself, and the judge saw him for the liar that he is.”
