Hurricane Katia’s severe winds batter parts of UK

Strong winds from the tail-end of Hurricane Katia are battering much of the UK,  the Met Office has severe weather warnings in place for many areas.

Southern and central parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England and Wales have been experiencing winds of up to 80mph (129km/h).

Flood alerts have been issued, with road, rail and ferry travel disrupted.

A driver was killed after a tree fell in high winds on a car, Durham Police have said.

Also in the north east, more than a dozen cars were crushed when the roof of a building on Littleburn Industrial Estate at Langley Moor collapsed due to strong winds.

In Scotland, a lorry hit a tree on the A811 near Arnprior causing the telegraph pole to collapse. Power has been restored.

The Game of Thrones set, near the Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge was ripped apart No-one was hurt in either incident.
