Giant Ferris wheel for Grand Cayman Island

Cayman Eye wheelFrom Travel Trade Caribbean

George Town.- A giant Ferris wheel known as the Cayman Eye, for panoramic views of the island, has been proposed as a possible new tourist attraction for George Town waterfront.

The concept is a mini version of the famous London Eye. Artists’ drawings and a website for the 40 meter (131 foot) observation wheel have been produced. The locally based entrepreneurs pushing the proposal say they have met with the Department of Tourism and are confident they can raise the US$2-3 million they believe would be required to make the project a reality.

Nadeem Samaha, U.K. based partner of the project, said the idea also included a surrounding park with gardens sculpted in the shape of Grand Cayman. He said the Cayman Eye could be a low-cost attraction that would allow tourists coming off cruise ships to see the whole island in 15 minutes.

Unmanned drone aircraft have been used to get an idea of the view tourists will get from the slow-moving observation wheel.

The observation wheel would be built in Italy and transported to Grand Cayman. Similar attractions have been built in the U.S., including one in Alabama. The developers say it would be able to withstand a hurricane.

From The Cayman Eye

Cayman Eye parkLocated in George Town, The Cayman Eye will be The Cayman Islands’ highest tourist attraction when it opens in 2015.

The Eye is 131ft high, each gondola can carry 6 people, and with 34 gondolas,

204 people can ride the Eye at once.

The Eye is specially designed to protect it from hurricanes, and each gondola has a roof to keep passengers shaded from the sun (and the rain!)

The park will provide a beautiful shaded area in which visitors and residents can come to relax, and will be one of the first steps in the regeneration of George Town.

Market Street will provide visitors with food and beverages, as well as shopping opportunities.

The park will be a superb event space, offering a combination of public and private events.

The park will have a strong emphasis on being ‘eco-friendly’. As much of the indigenous vegetation from the existing site will be reused, retail stands will be made out of wooden-clad recycled shipping containers and furniture will be made from recycled plastic.
