Friday’s Cayman criminal court cases

The following is a roundup of last Friday’s (7) action (or non action) in the Grand Cayman courts

Aaron McLaughlin. McLaughlin (20) is accused of threatening staff at the Bodden Town Cashwiz pawn shop with an imitation weapon and stealing $61 and a gold ring. He is also accused of assaulting a police officer during his arrest. The robbery took place in daylight robbery on 31st May, 2012.

The trial was supposed to have taken place on 17th September but had to be deferred to another date due to his attorney no longer being able to represent him because of an undisclosed conflict. McLaughlin, who has denied the charges, was remanded in custody at HMP Northward until 21st September to enable him to obtain and brief another lawyer.

Arthur Screaton. Screaton (53) is charged with two counts of false accounting and two counts of theft whilst being employed at Rackham’s Pub and Restaurant on North Church Street, George Town during 2010. Screaton is alleged to have stolen more than $10,000 from the business.

He was released from police custody on bail and was awaiting trial later this month. However on Friday he failed to answer his bail. Although the original bail terms required Screaton’s travel documents being seized they were later given back to him when the bail terms were changed allowing him to travel.

Prosecutor Michael Snape asked for the case to mentioned next week in case Screaton was discovered or turned up of his own accord. He said the trial could still go ahead as there was only one witness.

Travis Ebanks. Ebanks (31) admitted that he was the robber who held up a Texaco gas station at around 10pm on Thursday 31 May.

Ebanks was armed with an imitation hand gun and stole $239 after threatening the female cashier with the weapon before making his escape with the money on foot. Ebanks was remanded to HMP Northward until 19 October when sentencing will be given.
