CoViD-19 Rapid Testing Center in NYC

For a while now, I have watched in disbelief at the lack of capacity to get quick SARS-CoV-2 testing results in our country. As we have increased the testing capacity in the U.S., there are many more places to get your nose or throat swabbed. These swabbing locations are sending their samples to labs across our country. Unfortunately, laboratory capacity has not kept up and we have created a situation where people are waiting 5-7 days and sometimes up to 10 days for test results. That makes the test almost useless because for the entire week, while they are waiting for test results, people are walking around and possibly infecting many other people. When I came back from work in Tennessee last month, while I quarantined myself, I went and got a test done. I waited 6 days to get my results even when they knew I was a doctor and were supposedly running the test “stat”.

Well, I have decided to do something about that. I have rented a store front in Manhattan, I’m installing a huge new ventilation system so we have adequate air exchanges with fresh outside air (better than your average doctor’s office) and putting MERV-15 filters in the air handling unit to filter the air. I will be installing rapid testing machines and doing CoViD-19 tests so people have results within a few hours. They can then take action to protect their loved ones, co-workers, schoolmates and friends if they are infectious instead of walking around for a week not knowing. If this first one works, maybe we’ll open another center somewhere else.

Maybe through this action, we can help live events and film/TV productions come back a little faster. I sure hope so.

I’ll let you know how it goes. I’ve had to swallow hard a few times signing the big purchasing contracts.

I guess if it doesn’t go so well, I can write my newsletters from the large refrigerator box I’ll be living in under the Westside highway.
