Frankfurt, Germany, 26 October 2023:  Genesis has announced its collaboration with smartphone companies to allow a wider variety of iOS and Android phone users to gain digital access to their Genesis* via the Digital Key 2 convenience feature.

Digital Key 2 is one of the first services in the automotive industry to support cross-platform compatibility for contactless sharing of digital key capabilities between smartphones. For the first time ever, users will be able to share their digital keys between iOS and Android-based smartphones on selected devices.

The state-of-the-art technology allows customers to not only automatically unlock their Genesis when approaching the car, but also features Smart Tailgate to automatically open the boot just by standing behind the car for three seconds. Remote control locking and unlocking is enabled when in Bluetooth range, while Genesis owners can share access to their Genesis vehicles with up to three different smartphone users, regardless of their smartphone’s operating system.

“We were the first in the automotive industry to offer Apple and Samsung’s contactless Digital Key 2 feature when we launched it with GV60,” said Hyung Ki Ahn, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s Electronics Development Center. “Through active collaboration with our partners in the smartphone industry, we will continue to enhance customer experience and security around car connectivity.”

This innovative introduction comes as a result of the re-organisation of the way Digital Key 2 is provided through the Genesis app. The new functionality is available for all new Genesis vehicles with Digital Key 2 while older, similarly equipped models, will be able to utilise this feature with a software update. Cross-platform sharing will initially be available for compatible Apple iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel smartphones, with other models to follow.

The device-to-device sharing function can be used after updating the smartphone to the latest version or by deleting previously used car keys and re-registering the new keys before using. Many customers, including those with the new Genesis GV60, are already using the feature and that number is expected to increase with the service’s expanded compatibility, as it provides enhanced car connectivity, sharing between smartphones with different OS and improved consumer convenience.

This announcement strengthens Genesis’ position as a leader in innovation and technology, building range of convenience centric services, such as the brand’s hassle-free Plug & Charge program in partnership with Shell Recharge. Designed to deliver a seamless and secure charging experience, the bespoke system allows customers to simply plug in and charge without the need for a payment card or, once set-up, a dedicated app.

Notes :
* Currently only compatible with MY23 Genesis GV60
